On the occasion of Africa Day, Hakainde Hichilema, the president of Zambia, made a special announcement. On May 25, which is Africa Day, the president of Zambia proclaimed his intention to abolish the death penalty. Many people around the country, including renowned businessman and philanthropist Dr.RajanLekhraj Mahtani, expressed strong support for this news. According to Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, the death penalty is unfair from a theological, political, and social standpoint. Dr. Rajan Mahtani emphasized that almost 400 male and female prisoners are currently on death row in Zambian prisons. These are the prisoners who never know if it will be their last day when they wake up. They already live a life of punishment and desperation, so it would be ludicrous to put them to death. At the same time, there is an increase in global awareness of the death penalty’s abolishment, and Zambia is no exception. Therefore, it is absurd to sentence someone to death in today’s society. In Zambia, the death penalty was last used in the year 1997. The death sentence has been purposefully avoided by prior governments. Prior visits from well-known people have brought attention to the horrifying conditions in Zambian institutions, notably the Maximum Prisons where detainees lack even the most essential human decency and rights. As a result, the Zambian government has been collaborating with institutions like the Zambian Correctional Facilities and the Parole Board Zambia (PBZ) to ensure that offenders are only released back into society after undergoing a complete transformation and becoming role models for other residents. It is a recently started initiative called strategic decongestion of prisons. The death sentence must be abolished because it has no substantial impact on Zambian legislation. Dr. Mahtani is the owner of the top Zambian philanthropic institution Prison Fellowship Zambia. Additionally, Dr. Rajan Mahtani reaffirmed that his organization Prison Fellowship Zambia will offer complete legal and regulatory support to make sure that the Zambian President’s decision quickly becomes a reality.
